Jax

Meet Jax (10) an 8 -year- old, 96 lb. male Lab with a sweet and calm disposition.  Jax was turned into DLRR because the family who raised him is in crisis and can no longer care for him.  He was described as a ‘very well-behaved dog who simply needs a loving home.’

Jax enjoys walks, belly rubs, and napping on warm bricks or cool tiles.  He’s just getting the hang of walking around with a stuffie in his mouth and giving it a little rough-it-up shake.  His playful side is emerging and needs coaxing.  Jax loves to have his head and neck massaged and may lean in or give you a paw tap if you stop too soon.  He wants to share his Zen moments.   He will pick up the energy and pace at walk time. He is alert to critters (large and small) and people, however after a brief curiosity slow down or stop he’ll move on.  He walks well using a harness.

Jax is well mannered, no jumping or counter surfing.  He shares his space and people with a foster brother; he responds to basic commands and is gentle with treats (pieces of kibble).   Jax barks occasionally ‘Who’s at the door?’ and ‘Hello, I hear you out there in the neighborhood.’ A few barks and he’s done.  He has used the crate (he’ll give you the stink eye) however he is trustworthy to roam inside.  He is house trained and sleeps throughout the night.

His family reported Jax has lived with children ages 5 and up, has lived peacefully with cats and has used a doggie door.  He has also lived with 2 younger Labs. He has not been exposed to children, cats or a doggie door while in foster care.

Jax has dry flakey skin.   There is some hair loss (patches on each flank and belly) and thinning hair.  There is also hyperkeratosis (thickened skin) of his paw pads which does not interfere with his activity.    Jax’s best weight would be 10-15 pounds lighter.   Measured feedings and his enthusiasm for walks are assisting towards this goal.

Jax would thrive in a home where his people are around most of the time.  A home that will help him stay active and healthy.  He would do well with an easy-going canine companion or as an only dog.

Jax is an old soul, quietly establishing a new level of confidence.   He is ready for a new family.  A family that will welcome him, love him and make him feel secure.  He will be a steady and affectionate companion in return.
